An Open Letter from Ian Happ to Chris Sale, Fans, and the Entire Chicago Cubs Community
Dear Chris, Cubs Fans, and the Entire Chicago Cubs Community,
I want to take a moment to address the incredible journey that has brought me to where I am today and to express my deep gratitude to all of you who have been a part of that journey. Over the past few seasons, it has been an honor to wear the Chicago Cubs uniform, and I want to take this opportunity to reflect on the shared memories, milestones, and the immense pride I feel representing this incredible team and city.
First and foremost, to Chris Sale — my former teammate and one of the most dominant pitchers I’ve ever faced — I have to say thank you. When we were teammates, you brought not only your undeniable talent but a relentless passion for the game that set the bar for all of us. I remember seeing your drive day in and day out. Whether you were taking the mound, in the clubhouse, or just talking about the game, it was clear you were all in, and that mindset rubbed off on everyone around you. For me, playing alongside a pitcher of your caliber was a learning experience that I’ll always treasure.
But as we both know, baseball is a game that constantly moves forward, and things change. Our paths may have diverged, but the memories from our time together will always stay with me. We might not be teammates anymore, but I still carry the lessons I learned from you, whether it’s on the field, in my work ethic, or in the way I approach each game with the same drive that you exemplified. You helped shape the player I am today.
To the Cubs fans — I can’t begin to express how much your support has meant to me and how much it continues to fuel me as a player. Every game we play, I step out on that field and feel a connection to each of you, whether you’re at Wrigley Field or following from home. There’s something special about playing in front of the best fanbase in baseball. From the first moment I wore a Cubs jersey, you welcomed me with open arms, and that support has never wavered. Through the highs and the lows, you have stuck with us, and that unwavering loyalty and passion is what makes Chicago a baseball town like no other.
I’ve had the privilege of being a part of some incredible moments with this team, from thrilling victories to heartbreaking losses, but it’s your energy and dedication that keep us going, that make us strive to be better every day. Every cheer, every chant, every sign held up at Wrigley Field is a reminder of why we do what we do. You inspire me to be the best version of myself, not just as a player but as a person, because I know what it means to wear that “Cubs” across my chest.
To the entire Cubs organization — from the front office to the coaching staff, to my teammates, and everyone behind the scenes — thank you. The level of professionalism, the teamwork, and the commitment to excellence that I’ve experienced here is something that I’ll always carry with me. Every season is a new challenge, but it’s the people within this organization that make it possible to rise to that challenge, to push the boundaries of what we can achieve. We’ve faced adversity together, and we’ll face more in the future, but I believe that with the collective strength of the Cubs family, we are always capable of greatness.
I also want to acknowledge the legacy of this team and what it means to play for the Cubs. The history, the tradition, the iconic moments — they’re not just stories from the past; they’re part of the fabric of this organization and city. And every time I step onto that field, I understand that I am contributing to that legacy, alongside the likes of Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Ryne Sandberg, and so many others. To be a part of that history, and to represent the city of Chicago, is a privilege I will never take for granted.
Finally, I want to express my deep commitment to this team and this community. There’s a lot more work ahead, and I’m determined to do everything in my power to bring another championship to Chicago. This is a city that deserves it. The Cubs’ fanbase deserves it. I’m proud to be part of the next generation of players who will fight for that moment.
I know that we all share the same goal, and as we continue to build, grow, and strive toward greatness, I want you to know that I’m with you, every step of the way. Together, we’ll make history once again. Thank you for your continued support. It means more than words can express.
With gratitude and determination,
Ian Happ
