NFL Pro Bowl Tight End Russ Francis was one of two people died in a plane crash in upstate New York on Sunday,
his family confirmed on social media. He was seventy years old.
Francis’ younger brother, Ed Francis, shared a photo of his brother during a 49ers game, adding, “My older brother
Russ Francis was just died in a plane crash in Lake Placid, New York. Needless to say, my family and I are extremely
devastated. Flying was my brother’s lifetime passion, and it seemed like a suitable way for him to depart. God speed,
my big brother!!”
Francis was slain alongside Richard McSpadden, senior vice president of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
According to Lake Place News, the crash occurred at approximately 4:09 p.m. on Sunday. According to AOPA, the
two men were in a Cessna 177 Cardinal that “experienced an emergency after takeoff,” according to a statement.
The New England Patriots released a statement from team chairman and CEO Robert Kraft, saying, “On behalf of the
entire New England Patriots organization, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Russ Francis, who
tragically died yesterday.” Russ was a fan favorite during his playing career. He was a dynamic player on the field
with an even more outgoing demeanor off it. He had no limitations, pushed the envelope, and lived his life to the
utmost. Our sympathies are with Russ’ family, friends, teammates, and the many Patriots fans who are mourning his
passing.”
The 49ers released a statement on Monday, saying, “The San Francisco 49ers are saddened to learn of the tragic
passing of former tight end and Super Bowl XIX champion Russ Francis.” We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the
Francis family at this difficult time.”
Francis, a native of Seattle, was selected by New England in the 1975 NFL Draft and spent six seasons with the team,
earning Pro Bowl accolades in 1977, 1978, and 1979.
