The Toronto Maple Leafs have extended center Bobby McMann’s contract by two years with an average annual value of $1.35 million, the team announced Wednesday.
McMann was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
This season, he has 10 goals and eight assists for a total of 18 points through 40 games.
McMann, 27, went undrafted following a four-year career at Colgate, which finished in 2019-20.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound forward signed with the Maple Leafs as a free agency in April 2020. He scored 49 goals and 22 assists for 71 points in 118 American Hockey League games with the Maple Leafs’ affiliate.
The Toronto Maple Leafs completed a major transaction on Monday, signing William Nylander to an eight-year, $92-million contract deal. For GM Brad Treliving, the work has really just begun.
Of the two, Leafs Nation will be more interested in Marner’s next deal. On his current contract, he earns an average of $10.9 million each year.
Koshan believes Marner’s new cap cost will fall somewhere between Nylander’s $11.5 million and Auston Matthews’ team-leading $13.25 million. According to Sportsnet’s Josh Beneteau, it could be $12.392 million if he receives the same cap percentage (13.47) as Boston’s David Pastrnak.
Tavares’ current cap hit is $11 million. While the 33-year-old center is performing well, he is no longer playing at the level anticipated of someone in his position. In other words, he’ll have to take a significant pay reduction to stay in Toronto beyond next season.
