The Commanders have officially begun a new era with Dan Quinn and will soon have a fresh start at quarterback.
Quinn spoke with NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero at the Annual League Meeting on Saturday about the idea of
Washington drafting a quarterback with the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft or later in April’s event.
“I would say it’d be fair to envision we’d be taking a quarterback,” Quinn was quoted as saying. “To say where it will
happen, I believe it is a better issue for (general manager) Adam Peters. As the weeks progress, there will be a lot
more conversation, which is why we had a nice trip out meeting some guys; we’ll do that again in the coming weeks,
but I’ve enjoyed the process with Adam and going through it. He’s an amazing expert on this position, what it looks
like, and where to go, so going through the process has been really cool.”
Quinn and Peters will have to wait and see what the Bears do with the No. 1 overall choice before working together
on the April draft. After the Bears sold Justin Fields to the Steelers, the door appears open for USC prospect Caleb
Williams to join Chicago. What happens next is less certain.
Will it be LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, or someone else?
As they continue to examine, Quinn thinks there is still work to be done on who the Commanders will choose if they
opt to remain at No. 2 overall.
“I still have a lot of work to do into that space,” he told reporters. “Adam is well ahead of us in terms of experience,
but we focused heavily on our own team before moving on to the free agent process. And now that we’re finalizing
and working on the document, we still have more visits, people to come in, and it’s taken additional time. So, while
we’re getting closer, I wouldn’t say we’re there yet.”
Peters, a first-year general manager, enters his first NFL draft following a busy month in March. Peters signed
quarterback Marcus Mariota, running back Austin Ekeler, tight end Zach Ertz, linebacker Bobby Wagner, and safety
Jeremy Chinn in free agency.
