Red Sox pitcher reportedly may miss the season due to elbow injury.
Lucas Giolito went from being the Boston Red Sox’s expected Opening Day starter to perhaps missing the season due
to an elbow injury, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
ESPN reported on Tuesday that the right-handed pitcher could miss the entire 2024 season after a test revealed a
partially torn ulnar collateral ligament and flexor strain.
Giolito will most likely need surgery to rectify the injuries, which will keep him out for the season, since the
recuperation time is expected to be around six months.
Giolito completed 2023 with a 4.88 ERA and 204 strikeouts over 184 1/3 innings and 33 starts. Last season, he
played for the Chicago White Sox, the Los Angeles Angels, and the Cleveland Guardians.
This winter, Boston signed Giolito to a two-year contract worth $38.5 million. Losing Giolito would be a huge blow
for the Red Sox, who didn’t do much else in free agency and have no backup plans if the 29-year-old isn’t available.
Chris Sale, a left-handed pitcher, was traded during the summer. The Red Sox also signed reliever Liam Hendriks,
who had Tommy John surgery, and right-hander Cooper Criswell to help fill out the pen.
Last season, Boston finished 78-84 and ranked last in the American League East. The Red Sox finished last in their
division for the second consecutive year.
