Where will Brock Purdy rank next offseason in the NFL quarterback hierarchy? It may be really high if he has
another year like he did in 2023.
San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York told reporters this week that the organization is planning to compensate Purdy.
The quarterback can start negotiating a contract extension in 2025, and any agreement will surely make him the
team’s highest-paid player.
“I think it’s a good problem when your quarterback is one of your highest-paid guys on your team and in the league,”
York said. “So there’s a lot of planning that goes into it, but I’m grateful that we have [EVP of football operations]
Paraag [Marathe], [general manager John Lynch], and [head coach] Kyle [Shanahan]. They’ll figure out the logistics,
and all I have to do is sign the cheque. So my involvement in it is really simple.”
Purdy is set to receive a base salary of $985,000 this year, followed by $1.1 million in 2025, the last year of his rookie
contract. Following that, his pay will take up a large chunk of the team’s roster budget for the foreseeable future.
“I mean, it’s what the market is,” York concluded. “It’s unlikely that Brock will request something unprecedented.
I’m not sure how many quarterbacks are making more than $40 million right now. And, in my opinion, the
quarterback is the most important position in all sports, including football, and those individuals should be well
compensated.”
Willie Colon, an NFL player turned commentator, believes Purdy will not only be the 49ers’ highest-paid player, but
the rookie quarterback’s next contract will make him the highest-paid athlete in NFL history.
“I even jump out to say that I wouldn’t show up to training camp without a deal,” Colon said on FS1’s The Carton
Show. “The bottom line is that the man has completed all of the tasks you have requested. He’s come back, led teams,
made it to the NFC Championship, and overcome injuries. He’s had horrible games and rebounded. And you
mention a Super Bowl appearance this year, which might have gone any way.”
