Emma Raducanu pays tribute to Mike Dickson, Mail Sport’s iconic tennis correspondent, following his terrible
passing at the age of 59.
The 21-year-old British tennis sensation was eliminated from the Australian Open on Thursday after losing in three
sets against China’s Wang Yafan.
However, former US Open champion Raducanu took the opportunity to express his admiration for Dickson, who
authored a book about her ascent to prominence, and to offer condolences to his family.
I was surprised when I heard the news this morning. He was here two nights ago, and everything was OK,’ Raducanu
explained.
‘It really emphasizes how precious life is and puts everything in perspective.
‘I knew I had just lost three sets, but what transpired surprised me.
‘Condolences, I’m sorry it’s such a difficult day for everyone and his family, so I hope you can stay as strong as
possible.’
It occurred as tennis stars Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal paid tribute to Dickson, a well known journalist who
spent 38 years in the industry, 33 of them with the Daily Mail.
Condolences to Mike Dickson’s family. “Rest in Peace,” Djokovic wrote on X, the platform formerly known as
Twitter, in reaction to Dickson’s family’s announcement of his death.
Nadal commented on his X account, ‘Very sorry to hear about the demise of Mike, who has been watching tennis for
many years. My condolences to his family and to our tennis family on their loss. Rest in peace.
Dickson died on January 27, only days before his 60th birthday, while covering the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Following the announcement, tributes flooded in from all around the sports and journalism worlds.
