Tottenham Hotspur have signed former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou to a four-year contract, the English
Premier League club said.
He will become the first Australian manager in the Premier League when he joins Tottenham on July 1.
“Ange brings a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play,” Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said in a statement
Tuesday.
“He has a proven track record of producing players and understands the value of the academy-to-club link, which is
critical to our success. We’re thrilled to have Ange join us as we prepare for the season ahead.”
The 57-year-old former Australian international, who led Celtic to a domestic treble this season, will succeed Antonio
Conte as Spurs’ permanent manager.
Prior to signing Postecoglou, the club considered Feyenoord’s Arne Slot, Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, and
former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann.
Conte took command of Spurs in 2021, but he became the eighth manager to fail to end the club’s 15-year trophy
drought. Tottenham last won trophy in 2008, when they won the League Cup.
Following Conte’s acrimonious departure in March, interim managers Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason took over at
the north London club.
They finished ninth in the league following a disappointing season and missed out on European football for the first
time since 2009-10.
Tottenham has lost managing director of football Fabio Paratici, who lost his appeal against a 30-month sentence for
his role in a bogus accounting scam involving former club Juventus.
Levy is under pressure from supporters to get his newest choice right, with the ongoing trophy drought causing
rising anger.
Levy’s shift of policy, which included bringing in proven trophy winners in Mourinho and Conte, who are largely
pragmatic, defensive-first coaches, did not succeed, therefore it looks he has returned to his previous method of
selecting a manager who plays more expansive football and develops younger players.
One of Postecoglou’s first tasks at his new club may be to persuade Harry Kane that his future lies with Spurs.
The England striker has one year remaining on his contract and has been linked with transfers to Manchester United
and Real Madrid this summer.
