The New England Patriots are deeply saddened to learn about Junior Seau’s death, which was confirmed early today
in Oceanside, California. Seau, who was 43 years old, played linebacker with the Patriots from 2006 to 2009. The
team has made the following statement:
“We were surprised to hear the first reports about Junior Seau earlier today and are very grieved by the news of his
death. We were fortunate to have Junior join the Patriots in 2006, and we appreciate his numerous contributions to
the team over the next four years. He had a remarkable NFL career, and his unwavering enthusiasm for the game
quickly made him a fan favorite in New England. This is a sad day for the entire Patriots organization, including our
coaches and his numerous Patriots colleagues. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to his family and many
friends who will be grieving this loss.”
Seau was a 12-time Pro Bowler and 20-year NFL veteran, including four with the Patriots. He first joined the Patriots
on August 6, 2006, and played until 2007, before returning to the squad in 2008 and 2009.
In 2007, he was named team captain and appeared in every regular season and playoff game, starting the final four
regular season games and two of three postseason games as an inside linebacker. In 2007, Seau made 76 tackles (55
solo) and had 3.5 sacks. That season, he had three interceptions, the most in his career.
From 2006 to 2009, Seau appeared in 38 games for New England, making 16 starts and totaling 161 tackles (100
solo), 4.5 sacks, three interceptions, and five passes defensed.
The University of Southern California product appeared in 268 career games, making 243 starts for the San Diego
Chargers (1990-2002), Miami Dolphins (2003-05), and New England Patriots. The 6-foot-3-inch, 248-pound
linebacker made 1,914 career stops (1,460 solo), with 56.5 sacks for 344.5 yards, 18 interceptions for 238 yards, 98
passes defensed, 12 forced fumbles, and 17 fumble recoveries, one of which was recovered for a touchdown.
