Josh Doig from Hellas Verona is expected to join Olympique Marseille, according to Fabrizio
Romano, so Leeds United will not be getting him.
Leeds attempted to sign the Scottish defender, but it appears that their attempts were unsuccessful,
as TeamTalk recently disclosed. The player is anticipated to sign a £4.3 million contract with
French team Marseille, which would last until 2028.
The Scotland U21 international is also admired by Rangers, so Leeds wasn’t the only team
interested in him. Now that Marseille has advanced talks with Verona in an attempt to reach a deal,
both teams will lose out.
Doig is joining Marseille to take the place of departing Brazilian full-back Renan Lodi, who is
expected to sign a contract with Al Hilal for approximately £17.1 million, according to Romano.
In June 2022, Verona signed Doig from Hibernian. Throughout his 35 games with the Serie A team,
the defender recorded two goals and four assists.
Leeds was trying to bolster the full-back positions following the departures of Luke Ayling and Djed
Spence during this transfer window. Although Doig was on the list of targets, the club does have
other options.
The Yorkshire side is interested in Ben Johnson of West Ham United, Connor Roberts of Burnely,
and Neco Williams of Nottingham Forest, according to Phil Hay’s report on Thursday.
If the club were to let Lodi go, Marseille manager Gennaro Gattuso wanted a replacement, and they
are about to provide it with the signing of Doig from Verona. According to Sky Sports, the Italian
team has already decided on their replacement and is getting close to signing Rangers’ Ridvan
Yilmaz.
Leeds will probably now concentrate on their other targets in their ongoing defender-hunt. After
his recent injury setbacks, they will be trying to keep fullback Sam Byram active, but they also want
to add further depth at the position before the window closes.
