DETROIT: On Friday, the Detroit Lions announced four roster changes, one of which included the dismissal of a player who had spent five seasons with the organization.
Fullback Jason Cabinda, who joined the Lions in 2019, was released on Friday to make place for kicker Michael Badgley.
Prior to the Dallas Cowboys game on Saturday, Badgley was signed off the practice squad.
Michael Schofield, an offensive lineman, was added back to the practice squad by the Lions, who also released defensive lineman Chris Smith. Eight days earlier, Schofield was cut from the practice squad so that Craig James, a cornerback, could be signed by the Lions.
Two weeks earlier, Riley Patterson was replaced by Badgley as Detroit’s starting kicker for the game against Denver. In the two games he has played, he is 9 for 10 on extra points (one was blocked on Sunday in Minnesota) and has attempted one field goal, a 37-yarder against the Vikings.
Although Cabinda was just activated from the injured reserve, Malcolm Rodriguez, a linebacker, has filled in admirably at fullback during his absence. The Lions decided to split ways rather than make room on the roster for Cabinda.
Throughout his Lions career, Cabinda carried the ball six times for 27 yards and caught seven catches for 29 yards and a touchdown.
If James Houston, an edge rusher, and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson return from injured reserve, the Lions may soon need two more roster places. Each has a 21-day practice window in place.
