What is the greatest play in Super Bowl history? While that may be a difficult topic to answer, former St. Louis Rams
and Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner does have an opinion on what .
After a video claiming Warner’s famous pick-six against the Pittsburgh Steelers was the best play in Super Bowl history went viral, the Hall of Fame quarterback responded with the amusing disclaimer, “It depends on who you ask.”
The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in the 2009 Super Bowl, with Warner’s second-half pick-six proving to be the difference.
Despite trailing 17-7 at halftime and 20-7 in the fourth quarter, Warner and the Cardinals rallied to take a 23-20 lead
with approximately 2:30 minutes remaining.
Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers’ quarterback, led the team on an 8-play, 78-yard game-winning drive that culminated in an immediately memorable Santonio Holmes touchdown catch.
Aside from the interception, Warner had an outstanding night, completing 31 of 43 passes for 377 yards and three touchdowns.
Both teams’ best wide receivers had huge performances, with Holmes catching 9 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown and Larry Fitzgerald catching 7 for 127 yards and two touchdowns.
Fortunately for Warner, despite the loss to the Steelers, he was able to retire with a Super Bowl title under his belt,
having previously defeated the Tennessee Titans with Marshall Faulk, Terry Holt, Isaac Bruce, and the rest of the
“Greatest Show on Turf” in Super Bowl XXXIV, which was ultimately enough to earn him induction into the Pro
Football Hall of Fame in 2017.
Warner is widely regarded as the best undrafted player in National Football League history, having been named NFL MVP, Super Bowl MVP, and leading his team to a Super Bowl victory.
