In 2024, four of the nation’s major blue chips will have new head coaches. That adds to the drama, as Michigan, Alabama, Washington, and Arizona are all wrapped in mystery following the surprise departures of Jim Harbaugh, Nick Saban, Kalen DeBoer, and Jedd Fisch.
Each coach had their own reasons for leaving, but the truth remains. Recruits who pledged to join the Wolverines, Crimson Tide, Huskies, and Wildcats during prior regimes are now determining their next moves. For some, this means sticking with the programs they’ve committed to. Others will have to find a new place to live.
So, how long will Michigan, Alabama, Washington, and Arizona athletes be able to transfer freely? The Sporting News explores what some prospects’ next moves could be as they look to find their own position at the start of the 2024 season.
“Sure, the Super Bowl is the greatest prize in our sport,” stated head coach Jim Harbaugh. “But winning the national title. That’s really great. “Let us do that.”
The Vikings did not hire Harbaugh, so he returned to Ann Arbor. At the time, he stated that he would not consider returning to the NFL again. The following offseason, he met with the Broncos owner, but he did not go any further.
Harbaugh has now won the “pretty darn great” award. In 2012, he guided the 49ers to the Super Bowl, but they lost to a Ravens squad coached by his brother, John Harbaugh.
So why the Chargers, who finished 5-12 in 2023? Despite its 2023 record, the squad possesses a roster that can win a Super Bowl.
Is the star quarterback locked up for the long haul? Herbert checks the box. Is there an offensive line that can protect him? It could use some work, but it will suffice. Weapons for Herbert? Keenan Allen and Mike Williams are stars, albeit elderly and injury-prone stars, and Austin Ekeler’s departure could be troublesome. A capable defense? Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa, Derwin James, Eric Kendricks, and Asante Samuel Jr. all provide elite talent to the club. Add to that the Chargers’ high draft position — they pick sixth in the 2024 NFL Draft — and Los Angeles will be well-equipped to field a top-tier club in 2024.
The biggest question will be how Los Angeles handles their cap space. The Chargers are expected to be $40 million over the cap in 2024, which may pose some challenges to the roster looking as strong as it was in 2023. Fortunately, Harbaugh has demonstrated the ability to get the best out of his players. His predilection for producing quarterbacks may benefit a team led by Herbert.
Harbaugh wants to win a Super Bowl, and the Chargers are eager to capitalize on the success of their young star quarterback. After years of flirting with returning to the NFL, Harbaugh discovered his ideal circumstance.
