The final head-coaching position in the 2024 NFL hiring cycle has reportedly been filled, with Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn poised to become head coach of the Washington Commanders.
The Commanders, led by new owner Josh Harris, fired head coach Ron Rivera following a 4-13 season.
From 2015 until 2020, Quinn was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, where he went 43-42. He was fired midseason in 2020, when Atlanta was 0-5. Quinn led the Falcons to the Super Bowl in 2016, but the team lost a 28-3 lead against the New England Patriots.
Quinn has been Dallas’ defensive coordinator for the last three seasons.
From a Giants standpoint, Quinn’s move to Washington is intriguing not just because it fills a head-coaching opening in the NFC East, but also because of what it could signify for the Cowboys.
Dallas, of course, needs a new defensive coordinator. Could that be former Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, who split up with the team just a few weeks ago?
Martindale’s lone reported interview after leaving the Giants was with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who hired Ryan Nielsen. The Philadelphia Eagles were also allegedly interested in Martindale, but ultimately chose Vic Fangio.
