Willie Mays Day, commemorating the greatest San Francisco Giant of all time, will take place on Sunday, February 4.
Written as “2/4/24,” the date coincidentally aligns with the Say Hey Kid’s #24 jersey.
“It’s a once-in-a-century event and the only time it will happen while Willie Mays is alive,” said Sophie Lair, the San
Francisco Giants’ media manager.
The city is prepared to go all out to honor the 92-year-old Mays. City Hall, Coit Tower, and Oracle Park will be lit up
in orange. A banner will be hung from the 24 palm trees in Willie Mays Plaza, adjacent to the ballpark. On Sunday at
2:24 p.m., the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will bring out cable car #24 and ring its bell 24 times.
Not only are municipal authorities and significant monuments participating in the festivities; average Giants fans
can also dine and drink their way around the city with numerically related bargains. There are 24 ways to pay tribute
to a Giants legend who was also a 24-time All-Star, including coffee, cocktails, burgers, and beer.
Participants are invited to submit images with the hashtags #WillieMaysDay and #SayHey24, according to Adam
Swig, executive director of the charity Value Culture and organizer of the 24 businesses participating in the
celebration. Some of the participants will donate a portion of their income to the Willie Mays Scholars program,
which is a needs-based scholarship available to Black 9th and 11th graders living in San Francisco. Applications are
now open.
ATwater, located right on the Bay and within walking distance of the Giants ballpark, is a terrific place to grab some
fish tacos—and on Sunday, they’re only $2.40 apiece.
Just “Say Hey” to get 24% off your first drink at the Blue Light pub in Cow Hollow on Sunday.
Boudin Bakery, the traditional home of San Francisco sourdough, is going all out for May Day. Boudin will sell our
homegrown fish stew cioppino for $24.24, and they’ll also make a large baguette in the shape of the #24 jersey,
which will be on display below.
