The father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been arrested on at least his third offense of
driving while drunk, according to Smith County, Texas records.
According to jail records, Patrick Mahomes’ father was jailed in East Texas for driving while intoxicated for at least
the third time. The legal question arises as the younger Mahomes prepares to lead his team to the Super Bowl against
the San Francisco 49ers.
Patrick Mahomes Sr., 54, was arrested Saturday night in Tyler, and his bond has been set at $10,000. He was freed
on Sunday, according to jail records in Smith County, Texas.
Mahomes’ attorney did not immediately return a voicemail from The Associated Press for comment.
His arrest came a little more than a week before his son leads the Chiefs against San Francisco in Las Vegas, where
Kansas City hopes to repeat as Super Bowl champions.
At Super Bowl media night on Monday, the younger Mahomes will certainly be asked if his father’s arrest will be a
distraction. That may be a plot for next weekend.
Mahomes Sr. was arrested for the same felony in 2019 and sentenced to 40 days in jail, according to Smith County
records.
Mahomes Sr. spent 11 seasons in Major League Baseball as a pitcher (1992-2003).
The right-hander went 42-39 with a 5.47 ERA in 308 career games (63 starts) with the Twins, Boston Red Sox, New
York Mets, Rangers, Cubs, and Pirates. He appeared in the 1999 National League playoffs with the Mets.
Last month, Jackson Mahomes, the quarterback’s brother, had three felony charges against him dropped. He was
accused of grabbing a woman’s neck and kissing her without her permission.
