Grant Newsome is promoted to coach Michigan’s offensive line.

There has been a lot of upheaval on Michigan football’s coaching staff recently, but we now know that another old

face will remain.

Grant Newsome, the tight ends coach, has been promoted to offensive line coach at Ann Arbor.

Newsome originally joined the coaching staff as a student assistant in 2019, after being medically retired from

football due to a severe leg injury sustained during his true freshman season versus Wisconsin in the Big House in

2016. After serving as a student assistant, he advanced to a graduate assistant position working with the offensive

line for the 2020 and 2021 seasons before being promoted to tight ends coach in 2022.

Newsome has worked closely with both the offensive line and the tight ends, and he helped the Wolverines become

the first program to win consecutive Joe Moore honors in 2021 and 2022.

“I’m humbled and excited by the opportunity presented by Coach Moore to lead the offensive line at Michigan,”

Newsome stated in a press release. “I’d like to thank Coach Moore for believing in me and helping me grow as a

coach. I’d also like to thank Coach Harbaugh for everything he’s done for me during my playing and coaching career.

I can’t wait to continue the work that has been done to make the offensive line the finest in college football.

This is a no-brainer choice for incoming head football coach Sherrone Moore, and if officially announced, Newsome

will be the first position coach hired by Moore. Continuity is critical for the Wolverines right now, since they lost Jim

Harbaugh to the NFL last week and strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert Monday morning to join

Harbaugh’s staff in Los Angeles.
