Ravens Exhorted to Use Free Agency to “Steal” $141 Million Edge Rusher

The Baltimore Ravens played a great regular season in 2023, finishing with the best record in the NFL, but they lost

to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game.

Their loss in that game may prompt the team to make a major splash during the 2024 offseason in an attempt to

make another run for a Super Bowl ring.

That major splash may be made by signing a member of this year’s AFC Pro Bowl team, if one becomes available.

In a piece discussing potential cap casualties who may become steals for a new team, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher

Knox suggested that the Ravens pursue Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher Khalil Mack.

Mack is still under contract with the Chargers, but they can save more than $23 million by releasing him this

offseason.

He is coming off a strong second season in Los Angeles, but it may not be enough to keep him off the chopping block

as the team’s new leadership works out its cap issue.

The Chargers’ defense struggled during the 2023 season. They allowed the tenth most points in the league, including

63 against a poor Raiders offense.

That did not stop Mack from performing in Los Angeles.

Mack hadn’t performed like the overwhelming force that had propelled him to the top of the league’s edge rushers

early in his career.

His last season with double-digit sacks was in 2018, his first season with the Bears.

He had continued to be a respectable producer in the years since, but he wasn’t meeting the expectations that came

with his $141 million contract.

In 2023, he eventually returned to that level. Mack not only reached double digits for the first time since 2018, but he

also set a career high of 17 sacks.

The outstanding campaign may not be enough to save Mack from being cut for cap space, but it may be enough to

persuade the Ravens to sign him as their latest rental on the edge.
