Last Wednesday, Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley quit to become the Green Bay Packers’ new defensive coordinator. Now that he is in his new position, Hafley is already shaping his staff by hiring current Boston College defensive line coach Vince Oghobaase to fill the same role with the Pack.
Oghobaase has spent the previous four years coaching the Eagles’ defensive lineman, including Donovan Ezeiruaku, Cam Horsley, and Marcus Valdez. Prior to attending Boston College, he worked in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, where he collaborated with Hafley, UCLA, and Duke.
During his time at Chestnut Hill, Oghobaase helped BC rank third nationally in passing yards allowed (173.5 per game) in 2021. The Eagles also ranked in the top 30 nationally in six other defensive categories, including total defense, red zone defense, first downs allowed, third down %, team passing efficiency, and defensive touchdowns. A year later, BC placed seventh in the ACC in passing yards allowed (211.2) and improved from 1.67 sacks per game to 2.25, according to BCEagles.com A year later, Ezeiruaku had 8.5 sacks, placing him at the top of the league.
However, Boston College ranked at the bottom of the country in sacks this season, placing 130th. The Eagles were not poor at putting pressure on the quarterback; they just struggled to bring him down.
“I had the opportunity to work with Vince in San Francisco, and his knowledge of the game, energy, and commitment to the players jumped out at me,” Hafley said when he hired Oghobaase in 2020. “At Ohio State, he trained under Larry Johnson, one of the best defensive line coaches in football, and he earned valuable experience as the defensive line coach at UCLA over the last two seasons. We are thrilled to have Vince join the BC football family.”
Boston College is now seeking a replacement for Jeff Hafley. According to Pete Thamel’s tweet on Monday, the school will conduct interviews this week (in Atlanta) and hopes to unveil a new coach by the weekend.
