His time in Ann Arbor was short, but unforgettable. Gary Moeller, the former Michigan football head coach, has died
at the age of 82.
Moeller was the Wolverines’ head coach from 1990 to 1994, succeeding famous coach Bo Schembechler. Prior to
then, Moeller was Schembechler’s defensive ends coach, defensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, defensive
coordinator (again), and offensive coordinator, as well as the Illinois head coach for three years from 1977 to 1979.
Moeller began his coaching career under Schembechler at Miami (OH), but he also had the unique distinction of
playing linebacker at rival Ohio State, where he was a co-captain and three-year letterwinner. After being fired by
Michigan, Moeller spent two years as the Cincinnati Bengals’ tight ends coach before moving on to the Detroit Lions,
where he was the linebackers coach before becoming temporary head coach at the close of the 2000 season. The
following year, he became the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defensive coordinator, and he ended his coaching career after
two seasons as the Chicago Bears’ linebackers coach.
