Deal done: chiefs has sign a key player with $37million contract…

As the regular season for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023 comes to an end, the playoffs begin to take shape. With

attrition setting in and depth becoming more vital than ever, the organization is adding a couple more pass catchers.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston on Wednesday, Kansas City has signed wide receiver Anthony

Miller and tight end Izaiah Gathings. While Wilson did not explicitly state whether the duo will join the practice

squad, that is the presumed scenario.

On Tuesday, the Chiefs allegedly hosted Gathings and fellow tight end E.J. Jenkins for a workout. With Gerrit Prince

recently placed on the practice squad injury list, the organization presumably sought to balance its roster and needed

an extra person at the position. Gathings had time with Kansas City earlier this year, signing in July but being waived

before the regular season began.

The signing of Miller by General Manager Brett Veach is fascinating. The former Memphis standout was drafted 51st

overall in 2018, and his debut season with the Chicago Bears included 423 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

Miller spent three years there before moving on to play three games with the Houston Texans and Pittsburgh

Steelers. He appeared in one preseason game for the San Francisco 49ers this year but did not record a catch. The

Indianapolis Colts signed him to their practice squad before releasing him in October.

Miller last appeared in an NFL game in November 2021. It’s been more than two years since he’s posted a stat, so his

draft buzz and early-career production aren’t particularly relevant at this point. Miller has simply not clicked since

leaving Chicago, but if he is still in his peak athletically, he could be a lottery ticket. Gathings had an advantage over

Jenkins in terms of existing organizational ties, thus his signing is not surprising. Both he and Miller will protect the

Chiefs’ franchise depth down the stretch, and possibly into the future.
