Michigan intends to appoint former New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale as its defensive

coordinator, sources informed ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday.

The transaction is still being finalized, but there are no expected roadblocks in the recruiting process, sources added.

The Giants and Martindale parted ways in January following an up-and-down 2023 season in which the defense

finished 27th overall but tied for first in the NFL in turnovers generated while also being the team’s top unit. ESPN

Analytics ranked the New York defense 17th overall. During a poor six-win campaign following a playoff season, New

York’s offense ranked 30th and special teams ranked 25th.

Martindale will take over for Jesse Minter, who departed the program after two years on Tuesday to become Jim

Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Chargers. Minter helped Michigan win their first national

championship in 26 years, as well as two Big Ten titles and a CFP participation.

Minter and former Michigan DC Mike Macdonald used a variation of Martindale’s defense, with comparable

concepts and language. So the players’ transition may not be as drastic as if another NFL coach took control.

The SEC will distribute $741 million to its 14 member universities, or about $51.3 million per school, beginning with

the fiscal year 2022-23, commissioner Greg Sankey stated Thursday.

According to the league, the amount includes $718 million distributed directly from the SEC office and an additional $23 million retained by members for football bowl game expenses.

It’s a $19.2 million increase over the entire amount distributed by the SEC in 2021-22.

“SEC member universities are proud to support thousands of student-athletes who participate in broad-based athletics programs across the league,” Sankey stated in a press release. “SEC universities are committed to providing

a high-level experience for all of our participants through an impactful and life-changing college experience that

includes world-class support in coaching, training, academic counseling, medical care, mental health support,

nutrition, life-skills development and post-eligibility healthcare coverage for student-athletes.”
