Bryce Stanfield, a Furman defensive tackle, has died, according to several reports.
He was 21.
Stanfield’s death occurred just two days after he collapsed during a team workout.
The 21-year-old died “surrounded by his family and his Furman family,” Furman president Elizabeth Davis wrote in a message published on the school’s website.
According to reports, Stanfield suffered a medical emergency during the Paladins’ Wednesday morning exercise and was transported to a local hospital where he was placed on life support.
Furman coach Clay Hendrix stated in a statement that the program is “heartbroken beyond measure,” and asked that “everyone, first and foremost, lift up his parents, Fred and Teri Stanfield, and their family, in prayer on this day and in the days ahead.”
Stanfield, who is 6 feet 2 and weighs 268 pounds, was listed as a senior on the school’s website.
He recorded 49 tackles and seven sacks during his career. He was a two-time Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll member.
Furman vice president for intercollegiate athletics, Jack Donnelly, described Stanfield as a “beautiful soul.”
“Bryce will be dearly missed,” he stated. “But will be remembered in our hearts forever.”
