The Baltimore Ravens and its general manager, Eric DeCosta, will face difficult decisions during the 2024 offseason.
Due to the cap situation, they may need to eliminate players from the roster in order to make room for free agents.
Glenn Erby, a writer for USA Today’s Ravens Wire, discussed how the Ravens could free cap space during the 2024
offseason. One of the strategies he suggested was “Post June 1 Cut, Trade — Tyus Bowser.”
According to Erby, cutting or selling Bowser would save the Ravens $5.5 million in cap space while incurring only a
$2 million dead cap hit. According to Erby, “Bowser has only one year left on his extension and a team-friendly cap
hit.”
Bowser is entering the final season of his four-year, $22 million contract extension, which he signed during the 2021
offseason.
Bowser was picked by the Ravens in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft from Houston. They had great
expectations for the linebacker, but as Erby described it, “Bowser has been up and down since being drafted.”
“During his first four seasons, he never started more than two games,” Erby said. During his first four seasons,
Bowser only made 34 combined tackles, his career high.
To begin his career, the linebacker spent the most of his time on special teams, but by 2020, he had a 51% defensive
snap rate.
Following the 2020 season, the Ravens evidently believed in the young linebacker, as they extended his contract and
offered him a big raise.
Bowser repaid the favor by having the best season of his career. Bowser played inside linebacker alongside to Patrick
Queen and recorded 56 combined tackles, 7.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, and 15 quarterback hits.
It was by far his greatest season, and he played 77% of defensive snaps. He tore his Achilles in the season finale
against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“Bowser has played nine games since,” Erby writes. Bowser missed the start of the 2021 season owing to his
rehabilitation and was unable to regain his form when he returned.
