A football coach in Georgia was fired after holding a baptism ceremony for 20 of his players.
Isaac Ferrell will continue to teach in Tattnall County Schools, according to superintendent Kristen Waters.
On October 23, local preacher Gary Few baptized the players in tubs.
Some individuals in the district were supposedly outraged because Ferrell introduced religion into athletics.
In a letter to Waters, Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) attorney Chris Line stated that Ferrell “abused his power.”
“The district must refrain from infusing its football program with religion, and Coach Ferrell cannot be allowed to preach to student-athletes or allow a local pastor to preach to and baptize students,” he said in a statement.
Ferrell no longer works as a coach. However, Waters stated that the decision was made in response to an event that occurred following a game on November 3.
“The safety and security of our students is paramount to the Tattnall County Board of Education,” Waters stated in a statement. “Based on the findings of an investigation into an incident that occurred Friday night, Nov. 3, while traveling after the football game, the district determined that it would seek a head football coach who was in the best interests of the students.”
“As to any other allegations, the district does not comment during ongoing investigations.”
Waters did not respond quickly to a request for comment.
