BREAKING NEWS: The Detroit Lions’ coach has terminated his contract….
In order to sign first-round pick Eric Ebron, the Detroit Lions needed to clear cap space, which they did.
The Lions confirmed on Friday that veteran cornerback Chris Houston’s contract had been terminated. Houston had
been re-signed to a five-year contract in March.
“Chris Houston underwent a significant medical procedure this spring,” the organization announced in a press
release. “Both sides agreed that the wisest course of action at this time was to release Chris and allow him to heal his
injury away from the club. The Lions appreciate Chris’ services throughout the years and wish him the best of luck
with his recovery.
Houston signed a five-year, $25 million agreement last year. Houston, unlike numerous other injured players, had
missed the team’s voluntary exercises and required minicamp after undergoing toe surgery in the offseason.
When asked earlier this week if Houston, who was excused from minicamp, would lag behind his teammates in
learning the new defense, Lions head coach Jim Caldwell was prickly. Caldwell also appeared to presage Houston’s
exit.
“When he gets back or whatever happens,” Caldwell added, “we’ll figure it out then.”
