The couple met and began dating in high school in Colorado in the late 1990s, while Kyle’s father, Mike Shanahan, was the Denver Broncos’ head coach. They briefly parted ways before rejoining in college, when tragedy pushed them closer together.

Nancy O’Donnell, Mandy’s mother, was diagnosed with Stage 4 gallbladder cancer while still in college and died in 2002. Kyle flew from his college in Texas to Colorado on a frequent basis to see Mandy after learning of Nancy’s sickness, and he fell in love with her while observing how she handled her mother’s illness.

“There are very few times in life when you get to see someone for who they genuinely are,” Kyle told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2017. “Mandy’s experience was as awful as anything you could imagine, and it revealed who she was to me. There was no BS about her. I saw who she was. And that’s who I fell in love with.”

Kyle and Mandy have three children together after nearly 20 years of marriage: Stella was born in 2007, Carter in 2008, and Lexi in 2012.
