The Indianapolis Colts have parted ways with head coach Frank Reich, making him the second in-season firing
following former Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule; former Colts offensive lineman Jeff Saturday will take
over on an interim basis in his first NFL coaching post
The Indianapolis Colts sacked head coach Frank Reich after four and a half seasons in charge and named former
offensive lineman Jeff Saturday as the new interim coach in a surprise move.
Reich’s departure after Sunday’s 26-3 loss to the New England Patriots, which dropped the Colts to 3-5-1 on the
season after three straight losses.
On Twitter, team owner Jim Irsay verified Reich’s dismissal from NFL Network, making him the second head coach
fired this season after the Carolina Panthers fired Matt Rhule.
He leaves Indianapolis with a 40-33-1 record, having made the playoffs twice, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the
2018 AFC Divisional Round and to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card matchup in 2020.
Indianapolis had 121 yards of total offense against the Patriots this weekend, their fewest in a game since 1997, and
quarterback Sam Ehlinger was sacked nine times.
The outcome may have been the final nail in Reich’s coffin, but the franchise’s difficulty to find a Super Bowl-caliber
quarterback to lead a superb squad during the 60-year-old’s tenure as head coach had undoubtedly been on the wall
for some time.
