Bosa and the 49ers have agreed to a five-year, $170 million (A$267 million) contract, making him the highest-paid
defensive player in NFL history, according to ESPN.
According to the report, the defensive end will receive a stunning $122.5 million in guaranteed compensation.
Bosa had been absent from training camp while awaiting an extension, and this mega-deal comes four days before
the 49ers’ season opener against the Steelers on the road.
There were concerns that he would continue his holdout into the regular season, but with their defensive anchor in
the mix, the 49ers are now among the league’s finest.
Bosa has been one of the NFL’s greatest – if not the best – defensive players since joining the 49ers as the second
overall pick in 2019.
He has 43 career sacks, including an NFL-high 18.5 last season when he was named Defensive Player of the Year and
finished sixth in MVP voting.
The 49ers had previously activated Bosa’s fifth-year option, but he had hoped for a long-term contract with a pay
comparable to his contemporaries.
He now outperforms them all, including sibling Joey Bosa and Rams great Aaron Donald.
Joey, a Chargers standout, agreed to a five-year, $135 million agreement in July 2020, while Donald has inked
several high-paying contracts.
Donald inked a six-year, $135 million extension in 2018 before renegotiating a three-year, $95 million contract last
summer.
Nick Bosa’s new contract pays an average of $34 million per season.
The 49ers’ defense is expected to be one of the best in the league as the team looks to return to the Super Bowl for the
first time since 2020.
San Francisco has reached the NFC Championship Game or Super Bowl in three of the last four seasons, including
the last two.Last year’s season came to an end with a 31-7 loss to the Eagles in the NFC Championship Game, which
was known for the 49ers’ quarterback injuries.
