Teddy Bridgewater isn’t the only Detroit Lions quarterback who’s putting up his cleats and picking up a whistle.

David Blough has agreed to join the Washington Commanders’ new coaching staff as assistant quarterback coach.

He’ll report to new head coach Dan Quinn, offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury (who coached him in Arizona), and

quarterbacks coach Tavita Pritchard.

The Washington Commanders have signed former Detroit Lions quarterback David Blough as their new assistant

quarterbacks coach, according to the team’s announcement Thursday morning.

Blough finished the 2023 season on the Lions’ practice squad, but he did not sign a futures contract when the season

ended.

Blough, 28, had seven career starts and completed 138-of-242 passes for 1,435 yards, six touchdowns, and nine

interceptions. His last game was in 2022, when he started two consecutive games for the Arizona Cardinals.

Blough was a valuable intellect and game planner for the Lions, having returned to Detroit to serve as the team’s

third-string quarterback after spending time with Arizona and the Minnesota Vikings the previous year.

Blough is a smart football player,” Lions coach Dan Campbell stated early in the 2023 season. “He’s seen it.”

It is unknown whether the Lions ever offered Blough a place on the coaching staff, but they already have a

quarterbacks coach in Mark Brunell and an assistant coach in J.T. Barrett.

The Lions will most likely seek additional quarterbacks for the 2024 season. Jared Goff returns as starter, while 2023

third-round selection Hendon Hooker might be promoted to backup. However, with Blough and Teddy Bridgewater

leaving to pursue coaching opportunities, Detroit may be looking for an experienced passer who can provide an

additional voice in meeting rooms and assist on the field in an emergency.
