The NFL world is in grief over the loss of former Detroit Lions cornerback Stanley Wilson Jr., who died at the age of
40 after collapsing at the Metropolitan State Hospital of Los Angeles County a few days ago, though the news was
just announced on Wednesday.
Wilson, the son of former Cincinnati Bengals running back Stanley Wilson Sr., was rushed to the hospital on
February 1 after spending months in a county jail after being jailed for vandalism in August.
The former Lions player, who played for the team from 2005 to 2007, had a long history of mental health issues. His
arrest in August was for breaking into a Hollywood Hills residence, swimming in an outdoor fountain, and harming
the property.
According to prosecutors, the former Lions player was declared incapable to stand trial for the aforementioned and
previous incidents, prompting his transfer to Metropolitan State Hospital, a mental health facility.
Wilson was arrested in 2016 after being shot in the abdomen during an attempted robbery at a Southwest Portland
home.
In January 2017, he was arrested again in Portland for strolling naked through a neighborhood. He was caught a
third time in February 2017 for breaking into another house while naked.
Wilson fell and died after being admitted to a psychiatric facility in early February. The reason of death has not been
released, and autopsy findings are pending. It is also unclear whether he left family.
