Since being selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, AJ Dillon has proven to be a valuable member of the
Green Bay Packers.
In his first four NFL regular seasons, the Boston College product has 2,428 running yards and 16 rushing
touchdowns, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. He also appeared in three playoff games for Green Bay, but was unable to
do so in 2023 due to injury.
AJ Dillon is scheduled to become a free agency this summer once his rookie contract expires, and the Green Bay
Packers will need to address his issue sooner or later. If his future is away from Green Bay, he will undoubtedly have
plenty of suitors this summer.
If Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur had his way, he would want to have both Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon
return next season, but he conceded that this may not be realistic.
“AJ’s been a great member of our team, and certainly I think you’ve got to have multiple backs in this league,”
LaFleur said. “You have to.” It’s just the beating these guys take, and I believe you could really see his importance
every year around the conclusion of the season. But absolutely, I told him, “Hey, I’d love to have him back here.”
However, with Aaron Jones having a $17.6 million cap charge and a basic salary of $11.1 million in 2024, the Green
Bay Packers can only afford to keep one of them due to their cap position. And with general manager Brian
Gutekunst presumably leaning toward Aaron Jones, AJ Dillon’s time in Green Bay appears to be numbered.
