It has been expected since the Los Angeles Chargers announced Jim Harbaugh’s hiring, and it is now official. On
Friday evening, the University of Michigan football team announced the hiring of Sherrone Moore as its 21st head
coach in history.
Moore has been Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator and second-in-command for the previous two seasons, and he
served as interim head coach in four of Harbaugh’s six suspension games in 2023. Harbaugh has supported Moore as
his replacement since taking over the Chargers, and there’s no doubt the Wolverines’ locker room wanted the
university to choose from within the school.
University of Michigan Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics Warde Manuel announced Friday (Jan. 26) the
hiring of Sherrone Moore as the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach, following six years on the
Wolverines’ offensive staff. Moore becomes the 21st head football coach in school history, and the first African
American to oversee the nation’s most successful college football program.
“I want to thank Coach Harbaugh for the faith that he has displayed in me over the past six years and for supporting
my growth as a football coach during that time,” Moore said in a statement. “I’m grateful to Athletic Director Warde
Manuel for putting his faith and trust in me to be the next head of this football program. I’d also like to thank
President Santa Ono and the Board of Regents for believing in me. As the program’s future leader, I am delighted to
reward that belief and trust.
