Former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Jim Bob Cooter could soon be interviewing for an offensive coordinator
position in the NFL.
On Tuesday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers asked the Jacksonville Jaguars for
permission to interview Cooter for the vacant offensive coordinator position.
Cooter is presently the Jaguars’ pass game coordinator.
The Buccaneers parted ways with offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich earlier this month.
Cooter played at Tennessee from 2002 to 2006. In 2007 and 2008, he served as a graduate assistant under Phillip
Fulmer.
The former Vol moved to the NFL in 2009, working as an offensive assistant for the Indianapolis Colts. In 2016, he
was hired as the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator, a position he held until 2018.
Cooter has always been regarded as a highly respected coach in the NFL. At one point, he appeared to be on his way
to becoming a head coach. However, his experience in Detroit, a losing organization at the time (at least during his
final season), had a negative impact on his career. Landing the offensive coordinator job with the Bucs might put his
career back on track to become a head coach.
