The San Francisco 49ers scored the first touchdown of Super Bowl LVIII with a surprise.
Brock Purdy launched a reverse ball from the Kansas City 21-yard line to Jauan Jennings, who looked downfield
right away.
Nothing was open deep, but Jennings managed to find Christian McCaffrey on the other side of the field, although
behind the line of scrimmage, which was all he needed to accomplish.
McCaffrey had plenty of blocks in front of him, but he went untouched for the touchdown, and the accompanying
PAT gave San Francisco a 10-0 lead.
It was the 49ers’ version of the Philadelphia Special, which the Eagles used in Super Bowl LII. Against the New
England Patriots, Corey Clement took the snap and flipped it to tight end Trey Burton, who found quarterback Nick
Foles in the end zone.
McCaffrey now has five touchdowns in the postseason and has scored in 16 of his 19 games this season; it’s no
surprise that he was voted Offensive Player of the Year for the first time in his career.
San Francisco scored first with Jake Moody’s Super Bowl-record 55-yard field goal in the second quarter.
This is not new territory for Mahomes, however. He has trailed by double digits in each Super Bowl he has appeared
in.
The Niners are seeking for their first Super Bowl win in 29 years, while the Chiefs are going for their third in five
years.
