GREEN BAY, Wisconsin: The official voiding of the contracts of offensive tackle Yosh Nijman, cornerback/kick returner Keisean Nixon, and safety Darnell Savage has made things worse for the Green Bay Packers in terms of the salary cap in 2024.
The Packers are over $5.25 million over the estimated $242 million salary cap, according to OverTheCap.com. That figure will increase to almost $9.78 million once the anticipated 11-man draft class is signed.
Just to break even, that is. Not a single dollar is left over for them to resign any of their own free agents, add any outside free agents, or have left over to spend on even the most insignificant things like promoting a practice squad member to the starting lineup.

Savage’s fifth-year option was increased by the Packers last summer by void years, and Nixon’s
I believe we’re moving into a slightly better situation than we were previously,” he remarked.
Yes, but how did the Packers get up in this situation?
Savage operated under the terms of a fully guaranteed $7.901 million option for the fifth year last year. The Packers reduced Savage’s base pay to the league minimum, converted the remaining money to a signing bonus, then added four void years to the end of the contract to aid in the salary-cap calculation rather than placing the entire amount on the cap. His 2023 cap amount was reduced to $2.444 million as a result, however $5,456,800 in bonus money was left over and transferred to the 2024 salary cap.
The Packers re-signed the All-Pro Nixon to a $4 million, one-year contract during the previous offseason’s free agency. They added four vacant years at the end of the contract rather than putting every penny on the cap. His $1.85 million signing bonus was therefore divided into five $370,000 installments. The last four years add a total of $1.48 million to the 2024 maximum.
