According to NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo, the Steelers will release the seven-year veteran after two seasons.
The team later announced the decision.
Trubisky had two years left on his deal, but no remaining guaranteed money, and had done little to solidify a roster
place over the previous two seasons, so the move, which Garafolo described as a mutual choice, was not surprising.
In addition to Trubisky, the Steelers dismissed offensive lineman Chukwuma Okorafor (Steelers 2018 third-round
draft pick with 59 career starts) and punter Pressley Harvin III (Steelers 2021 seventh-round pick). The changes will
save approximately $13 million in salary cap space.
Trubisky, who was signed in the 2022 offseason as a bridge quarterback to Kenny Pickett and a potential
resurrection product following a promising 2021 with the Buffalo Bills, had his ups and downs with Pittsburgh, with
the latter being more prevalent.
He went 2-5 as a starter for the Steelers, with 12 appearances, 1,884 passing yards, eight touchdowns, ten
interceptions, and a 77.6 quarterback rating.
It’s the first important move of the offseason for the Pittsburgh quarterbacks.
Pickett, a 2022 first-round pick, stays, but his sophomore difficulties have left the QB1 position uncertain. He sat
behind Mason Rudolph down the stretch, but Rudolph is an upcoming free agent. Garafolo and colleagues NFL
Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero stated Sunday that with Arthur Smith as offensive coordinator,
the Steelers may look into signing Ryan Tannehill.
Trubisky, 29, is moving on yet again.
