The Giants fell to 1-2 on the season after losing their Week 3 opener on the road against San Francisco, 30-12. And,
based on what a few 49ers players said after the game, they weren’t done putting the damage on New York,
particularly quarterback Daniel Jones.
Several unnamed 49ers players criticized Jones for his performance in the loss.
“The dude did not want to throw the ball,” one unidentified 49ers defender told the San Francisco Chronicle. “You
could tell early on that it was not going to happen. Everything was a checkdown. At that moment, we knew what time
it was.
Jones finished the game completing 22 of 32 passes for 137 yards and one interception. To the point stated by an
unidentified 49ers player, there were a few instances in which New York attempted to push the ball downfield.
According to TruMedia, twenty of Jones’ pass attempts traveled five or fewer air yards. Only two passes that night
traveled more than 21 yards through the air.
Jones’ play also irritated several 49ers players, particularly given the four-year, $160 million contract extension he
received with the team this offseason. One anonymous 49ers player described his compensation as “unbelievable.”
Meanwhile, a second termed it a “travesty,” and a third described his deal as “ridiculous.”
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw was one 49ers player who spoke openly against Jones’ contract.
“A lot of people who make all that money don’t even deserve it,” he went on to say. “I believe they took a chance [by
paying him]. I mean, he is not bad. “And if you don’t have anything better.”
Jones’ career prime-time record now stands at 1-11, the worst for a quarterback with at least 10 starts since 1970.
