Joe Gibbs Racing said on Sunday that co-owner Coy Gibbs died in his sleep at the age of 49. Joe Gibbs’ son worked
as an assistant coach for the Washington Commanders during his father’s second spell as head coach (2004-06).
“It is with great sorrow that Joe Gibbs Racing confirms that Coy Gibbs (co-owner) went to be with the Lord in his
sleep last night,” the company announced in a press release. “The family appreciates all the thoughts and prayers and
asks for privacy at this time.”
Gibbs died hours after his son Ty won the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series title. He was one of the most visible members
of the Gibbs family’s NASCAR racing team, succeeding his late brother J.D. as vice chairman.
Before the season finale of the Premier Cup Series at Phoenix Raceway, there was a moment of silence in Gibbs’
honor. Race winner and series champion Joey Logano, who formerly drove the No. 20 car at JGR and is now piloted
by championship challenger Christopher Bell, dedicated his victory to Gibbs after the race.
Daniel and Tanya Snyder, the proprietors of Commanders, made a statement following Gibbs’ death.
“We are devastated to learn of the passing of Coach Gibbs’ son, Coy,” the statement continues. “Our hearts go out to
Coach Gibbs and his wife, Pat. Coy was a member of our Washington football family, serving on our coaching staff
from 2004 to 2006. The whole Washington Commanders family sends their heartfelt condolences to his wife
Heather and their four children.
