NFL free agency has begun, and we’re tracking every big signing, trade, and release of the 2022 offseason, complete
with analysis from our NFL Nation writers and evaluations from our experts. The first round of the 2022 NFL draft
will commence on ESPN on April 28.
According to Roster Management System, newly acquired quarterback Carson Wentz will use $28 million in cap
space, leaving the Washington Commanders with approximately $7 million to spend in free agency. The
Commanders are looking for a middle linebacker to pair with Cole Holcomb and Jamin Davis outside. It would help
improve an inconsistent defense that finished last in points and 31st in yards in the first six games of last season, but
ninth and fourth in the following six. The Commanders also need a guard with free agent Brandon Scherff expected
to leave, a safety with Landon Collins expected to be released, and a proven No. 2 receiver to complement Terry
McLaurin.
What that means: When Washington fired Ereck Flowers on Wednesday, the team promptly turned to Norwell.
Coach Ron Rivera, who coached him in Carolina from 2014 to 2017, as well as Commanders’ line coach John Matsko,
admires how he developed into a quality player after going undrafted. Norwell has been a solid run blocker in a team
that prefers to run the ball. He adds another veteran to the group. Washington would seek to add another interior
lineman, maybe through the draft, after losing Scherff in free agency.
