San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that he fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks during Super
Bowl LVIII, despite previously stating that he expected all staff to return in 2024.
The Kansas City Chiefs won their third Super Bowl in five years, defeating the 49ers 25-22 on Sunday night. Patrick
Mahomes was the star of the show, passing for 333 yards and two touchdowns and winning Super Bowl MVP for the
third time in his career.
The setback compounds Shanahan’s Super Bowl difficulties. He has now lost two Super Bowls as a head coach, both
to the Chiefs, and was also the offensive coordinator when the Atlanta Falcons lost to the New England Patriots in
the most dramatic comeback in Super Bowl history.
Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce sends poignant letter following Super Bowl LVIII parade shooting.
Shanahan is already making changes to his team, only three days after the game in Vegas. He opted to fire Wilks,
who had only been hired a year ago to replace DeMeco Ryans after being named head coach of the Houston Texans.
During a conference call, Shanahan stated: “This morning, I relieved Steve Wilks of his duties. [We’re] going to make
a change at defensive coordinator. A difficult decision, because it says nothing about Steve as a guy or a football
coach. I mean, he’s everything we wanted in a man. He is an excellent football coach.
