In recent seasons, the San Francisco 49ers have come dangerously close to recapturing the franchise’s glory days.
Their most heartbreaking near miss occurred on Sunday in Las Vegas, when they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in
Super Bowl LVIII after nearly five full quarters.
However, as the 49ers recover from their most recent postseason failure and begin to retool for their first Super Bowl
victory in three decades, they have already expressed their determination to not simply maintain the status quo and
hope for better results the next time around.
Coach Kyle Shanahan revealed on Wednesday that Steve Wilks, the team’s defensive coordinator, had been sacked.
The 49ers’ firing was not entirely unexpected, given that they struggled on defense during the regular season after
Wilks took over for DeMeco Ryans, and then again during the NFC playoffs. But it was certainly unexpected that a
club would make such a significant change to its coaching staff three days after coming so close to winning the Super
Bowl.
“We felt pretty strongly that this was a decision that was best for our organization,” Shanahan told reporters,
according to the team’s website. “Even though it was a decision I didn’t want to make, I came to know… A different
direction is best for the organization.”
The 49ers hired Wilks after the Houston Texans hired Ryans as head coach last summer. Ryans had been the 49ers’
defensive coordinator for two seasons after succeeding Robert Saleh, who was hired as coach by the New York Jets
after the 2020 season.
