The Green Bay Packers have suspended cornerback Jaire Alexander for Sunday night’s must-win game against
Justin Jefferson and the Minnesota Vikings.
The decision stemmed from, but was not limited to, Alexander declaring himself captain for the Packers’ 33-30
Christmas Eve victory over Carolina
“It’s never for one thing,” said coach Matt LaFleur, who made the decision with general manager Brian Gutekunst. “I
believe there will be many lessons learned along the way by everyone engaged, and we hope to learn from them. I
believe we will. I believe there will be improved communication moving forward.”
“The decision to suspend a player is never easy, and it is not one we take lightly,” Gutekunst said in a statement.
“Unfortunately, Jaire’s behavior prior to the game in Carolina prompted us to take this measure. As an organization,
we demand that everyone prioritizes the team.
“While we are unhappy, we had a fantastic talk with Jaire this morning and fully anticipate him to learn from our
experience as we move forward together. We are excited to welcome him back next week since he is a valuable
member of this team and will continue to be in the future.”
Alexander returned to Green Bay’s lineup in Carolina after missing six games due to a shoulder injury. LaFleur did
not name him as one of his three weekly captains. Alexander felt that because the game was being played in his
hometown of Charlotte, he should be captain. So he constructed one for himself.
“I don’t think Coach knew I was from Charlotte,” Alexander explained after the game.
