Lawrence Guy was selected NFLPA Community MVP last week for the baby shower he and his wife Andrea hosted
for local single mothers on November 12th. The Guys sponsored a shower at Gillette Stadium for new mothers from
local groups, and while the event provided moms with everything they needed for their newborns, it was more than
simply a celebration.
It was time to connect and heal, and it began with Andrea.
Andrea was pregnant with the couple’s third child when she was rushed to the hospital for an emergency C-section.
Andrea and their daughter, Isabela, faced peril for the next few days. Andrea was admitted to the hospital when
Isabela was in the NICU.
“I was going in and out, just praying,” Andrea added. “There’s a reason why I’m here.”
Andrea realized why she was at the hospital while recovering on a bed. Andrea momentarily shared a room with
another new mother, and while being separated by a curtain, she couldn’t help but hear when she called relatives,
friends, and the baby’s father to inform them that the baby had been intubated in the NICU.
“She just kept calling people, telling them what happened, asking for help and support,” she added. “They were
saying just really nasty things, and she was desperate for support.”
Andrea called the social worker into their room and told her what she had heard. Andrea understood the social
worker couldn’t divulge any information, but she really needed to do something to show this mother she wasn’t
alone, even if she felt like it. She wanted to buy her everything she would need to support herself and her kid.
