The signing of veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie by the Los Angeles Lakers was written in the stars—or, more appropriately, Dinwiddie wrote it himself many years ago.
Dinwiddie was dealt from the Brooklyn Nets to the Toronto Raptors on Saturday, and they waived him. After clearing waivers, the 30-year-old decided to join the Lakers as a free agent.
As part of his team introduction, the Lakers dredged up one of Dinwiddie’s old tweets from 2013, which hinted that the former Nets star was destined to come to Los Angeles.
The Lakers waited 11 years before signing the established shooter this year.
For better or worse, the Lakers did not make any moves during the NBA trade deadline, but they did have an open roster slot, allowing them to sign Dinwiddie without trading any players.
Dinwiddie, who is averaging 12.6 points and 6.0 assists per game this season, will return to his hometown, hoping to help the ninth-seeded Lakers build momentum for a late-season push and playoff run.
“Playmaking, another ball handler, another shot-maker,” LeBron James said about Dinwiddie. “Another man, another veteran. It’s always beneficial to have a veteran with such talent. So let’s see what happens.
