Though the goal seemed unattainable to most, Ron Rivera failed to deliver the turnaround in Washington that he
promised.
Commanders managing partner Josh Harris fired Rivera as head coach on Monday and plans to rebuild the football
organization on a more solid foundation.
“As we look ahead, we recognize that the results this season were insufficient and that a strategic shift in leadership
and approach is required,” Harris stated in a social media post.
Rivera expressed gratitude to Washington’s fans, players, coaches, and new ownership for their support, as well as
his role in guiding the franchise into a new era.
“As for Washington, it wasn’t simple, and there is still a lot to be done, but I believe we started to transform the
culture of this organization in significant ways. And, on a personal level, serving this club and the fans who support it
every week has been one of the greatest privileges of my career,” Rivera stated in a statement released by the
Commanders.
Harris stated during a press conference on Monday that he intends to conduct a thorough but timely search for the
two seats.
“We want it to be as quick as we can, but the ultimate goal, right, is to be an elite team that’s competing for
championships,” said Harris. “Obviously, I want to build a successful franchise rapidly. On the other side, for me, it’s
about making the correct choices.”
Harris said he’s putting together a small advisory council to assist him identify a new head coach and head of football
operations.
