When Jason Verrett worked out with the San Francisco 49ers in September, approximately seven of his old colleagues came near the
practice field to see the veteran cornerback. Kyle Shanahan, the head coach, admitted he had never seen something like that before.
Following a further session on November 16, the 49ers extended Verrett an offer to join the practice squad. The two sides did not
reach an agreement until this week, with Verrett officially signing on Monday.
“I’m excited to be back,” Verrett told reporters on Wednesday. “I missed you guys. “I’m just excited to get back out there.”
It’s evident that the cornerback remains a locker-room favorite. The players’ emotions to the reunion reflect the camaraderie he enjoys
with them.
“We got our big brother back,” cornerback Deommodore Lenoir stated. “As a rookie, he always took us under his wing, me and [CB]
Ambry [Thomas], and taught us the defense. So just having him come back and see how far we’ve gone was the finest feeling for me, as
did being able to play with him again.
Verrett is more than a year gone from the Achilles injury he sustained during a 49ers practice session in 2022. That injury ended his
recovery from the ACL injury he suffered in Week 1 of the 2021 season.
“I feel like, since I’ve been here, he’s been a part of the team, even when he’s not here,” defensive end Nick Bosa stated. “A lot of guys
sustain injuries. Few people can recover from as many ordeals as he has. I told him yesterday that he’s an example to all of us, just to
keep grinding and to consider the emotional part of dealing with so many severe injuries and recoveries. He’s clearly a
