As part of the World Superbike support package, the 22-year-old was engaged in a multi-rider incident during the Supersport 300 race at Portimao last weekend.
Steeman passed away suddenly on Tuesday due to severe head injuries.
He is the second rider to die in the Supersport 300 class in less than a year, following Maverick’s cousin Dean Berta Vinales, who was murdered in a similar incident in Jerez in 2021.
Following Dean Berta Vinales’s passing, additional grid number caps and age restrictions were implemented for lesser capacity bike classes, such as Moto3 and Supersport 300.
However, Maverick Vinales feels that the Supersport 300 bike itself is currently the biggest problem. He claims that because the bike is too heavy and underpowered, pack races are too frequent.
When asked what should be done in light of another fatal Supersport 300 incident, Vinales responded, “I always had the same opinion about the Supersport 300, and I said before Dean [had his accident] and that type of category with bikes of 160 kilos that can ride at maximum 140mph on the straight is useless for a rider.”
You don’t get any knowledge. The gifted men are competing in a competition where the winner is the bike that travels two kilometers per hour quicker. That doesn’t show any talent.
“I recall that when I was a child and had to ride the 125GP, you had to be really skilled and it was hard to follow the good men or win.
