The Kansas City Chiefs have informed a top player that the team is not in a position to give them a big bag. The
Chiefs have made a few roster adjustments since the Super Bowl, indicating that the franchise intends to save costs
this summer.
The Chiefs have signed punter Matt Araiza, which means All-Pro punter Tommy Townsend will be available for free
agency. On Wednesday, they cut Marquez Valdez-Scantling.
The Chiefs have not decided on Chris Jones’ contract. However, they are close to finalizing their plans with L’Jarius
Sneed. According to reports on Tuesday, the organization planned to execute a “tag and trade” of Sneed if they could
not reach a long-term agreement before the franchise tag deadline next week.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday that the Chiefs have given cornerback L’Jarius Sneed
permission to seek a trade. Rapoport said that the Chiefs might choose to deploy their franchise tag on Sneed before
next Tuesday’s deadline and then move the fourth-year defensive back.
If Kansas City does tag Sneed by the March 5 deadline, it will have until mid-July to either lock him into a longer
contract or, presumably, make good on its promise and move him. Cornerbacks’ one-year franchise tag is set at $19.8
million for the 2024 season.
It was improbable that the Chiefs would maintain Sneed and Jones on the same defense next season. It’s evident that
the Chiefs are prioritizing Jones while also attempting to get some value for a former fourth-round choice who was
developed under defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
