The first names that come to mind when thinking of the finest defensive players on the Green Bay Packers are most likely Kenny Clark, Jaire Alexander, or Rashan Gary. And with good reason. In addition to Alexander and Clark having several Pro Bowl appearances, Gary is among the NFL’s top young pass rushers.
Many would cite Aaron Jones as the most recent example of a player who “Carrys the G” and sacrifices their own money to continue with the Packers. Pro Football Hall of Famer LeRoy Butler and Packers Hall of Famer Gilbert Brown are two more famous players who have accomplished this in the past.
For their on-field achievements and/or team-first attitude, each of those players is deserving of praise. Nevertheless, one player on the squad right now does not receive nearly as much credit as he should for his contributions to the club’s success, both on and off the field.
Of course, that player is Preston Smith, who just agreed to stay with Green Bay despite taking his second pay reduction in six years.
